Trump's Marine One Too Close to Passenger Jet at Reagan Airport

On Tuesday, a military helicopter transporting President Donald Trump came alarmingly close to a passenger aircraft taking off from Reagan Washington National Airport, leading to a safety review by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This incident has sparked significant concerns regarding the decision to allow the commercial flight to depart while Marine One was in proximity, particularly since commercial operations are usually suspended during such times. Following a tragic crash in January 2025 that resulted in 67 fatalities, the FAA had prohibited mixed traffic of helicopters and jets at the airport. The FAA reported a brief loss of separation, although the two aircraft continued to diverge. Sources indicated that air traffic controllers failed to pause commercial flights as mandated by last year’s regulations, which stipulate a minimum separation of 2.4 km (1.5 miles) horizontally and 152 meters (500 feet) vertically. The incident occurred as Marine One departed from the White House, with the FAA confirming that Trump was not in danger.
