Trump announces $22bn overhaul of Washington Dulles airport

On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump announced a $22 billion initiative aimed at revitalizing Washington Dulles International Airport. This extensive project, which ranks among the largest airport renovations proposed in the US, will involve the replacement of concourses and the addition of a sizable parking garage, all while maintaining the iconic main terminal. Funding will come from municipal bonds. Present at the White House were United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy. The plan encompasses 5 million square feet of newly constructed or refurbished airport facilities. Previously, the airport authority had sanctioned a $7 billion capital plan for Dulles. Trump criticized the airport as "one of the worst anywhere in the world," asserting that the upgrades would potentially make it "maybe the best." Duffy had confirmed the federal initiative in May. This announcement is part of a broader series of significant projects initiated by Trump in the Washington area.
