Trump and DOT Unveil $22.5B Dulles Airport Revamp with Saarinen Terminal Preservation

Plans to upgrade Dulles International Airport in Washington, D.C., were announced by President Trump and the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). This ambitious $22.5 billion initiative, which involves collaboration with United Airlines and the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA), follows a DOT solicitation from December 2025. Numerous firms, including AECOM, Zaha Hadid Architects, and Grimshaw, expressed interest, but an architect has yet to be selected. The project aims to maintain Eero Saarinen's terminal as the primary entrance while introducing a new parking garage with 32,000 spaces, replacing Concourses C and D, and constructing a new control tower. MWAA President Jack Potter noted the Saarinen family’s continued involvement, while the preservation group DOCOMOMO DC raised concerns about altering the 1962 design. Trump assured that airlines would fund the project, pending congressional approval, with phased construction anticipated to begin shortly.
