True Detective Night Country: Jodie Foster in the New Season

The fourth season of True Detective, titled Night Country, premieres with Jodie Foster as Detective Liz Danvers. Set in Ennis, Alaska, during the two-month polar night beginning December 17, the series follows the disappearance of a research team from the Tsalal laboratory. The scientists are found frozen in grotesque poses, and a human tongue is discovered at the scene, linking to an unsolved murder of an Indigenous woman. Danvers, a materialist and misanthrope, is forced to collaborate with Officer Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis), an Indigenous activist and former boxer. Navarro, haunted by her missing mother and visions of the dead, works with Danvers despite their past conflicts. The series, written and directed by Issa López, incorporates existentialist themes, references to the first season, and nods to horror films like John Carpenter's The Thing. It explores matriarchy, Indigenous rights, and the MMIWG movement. Filmed in Iceland, the show features allusions to Nietzsche, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Edgar Allan Poe, Jules Verne, and Cormac McCarthy.
