Troublesome Creek Stringed Instrument Co. Uses Luthiery for Addiction Recovery in Kentucky

In Hindman, Kentucky, the Troublesome Creek Stringed Instrument Co. merges traditional Appalachian craftsmanship with recovery from substance abuse. Established by luthier Doug Naselroad alongside the Appalachian School of Luthiery, this nonprofit operates the Culture of Recovery program, offering apprenticeships for individuals overcoming addiction. Participants craft guitars, mandolins, dulcimers, and banjolynns from Appalachian hardwoods. Alumni include Anthony Parsons, who began rehab in September 2020 and now creates instruments, and Jeremy Haney, a prominent mandolin maker focused solely on mandolins. The devastating Appalachian floods in July 2022 led to the destruction of five buildings, including the factory, which required three years and millions for restoration, aided by musicians Chris Stapleton and Tyler Childers. The company has made around 400 instruments, priced between $525 and over $6,000.
