Trophies of Empire Archive Study Day at Arnolfini

On October 5, 2023, Bristol's Arnolfini will host a study day focused on the influential exhibition 'Trophies of Empire' from 1992–93, which was spearheaded by artist Keith Piper in collaboration with Bluecoat Gallery, Arnolfini, and Hull Time Based Arts. The program includes a discussion featuring Piper, Bryan Biggs, and Louis Hartnoll, followed by a roundtable moderated by Anjalie Dalal-Clayton, an art historian from the University of the Arts London. Participants will have the opportunity to examine archival materials linked to the exhibition, which encouraged artistic responses to British imperial history and the transatlantic slave trade, coinciding with the 1992 quincentenary of Columbus's journey and the Maastricht Treaty. This study day is part of Afterall's Exhibition Histories initiative, co-published with Asia Art Archive and CCS Bard, and distributed by Koenig Books.
