Trondheim Kunstmuseum exhibition critiques quantification's limits through contemporary art
From 29 February to 9 August, Trondheim Kunstmuseum showcases 'Beyond Measure,' an exhibition featuring eight contemporary artists who question conventional norms. Vida Lavén presents her playful sculptures 'Non Record Attempts II – World’s Second Largest Teddy Bear' (2019) and 'Non Record Attempts III' (2019), which humorously illustrate teddy bears that fall short of record-breaking status. Oddvar I.N. Daren's 1982 piece, 'Measuring the Depth of Snow,' depicts his struggle in deep snow. Meriç Algün's 'Billboards' (2012) critiques biased citizenship applications, while Toril Johannessen's 'Words and Years' (2010–16) examines scientific terminology. Alexander Gutke's 'Singularity' (2010–16) includes a film measuring room sizes, and Ragnar Kjartansson's nine-channel video 'Scenes from Western Culture' (2015) highlights the absurdities of Western standards, referencing On Kawara's rule-based art to underscore the immeasurable influence of art.
