TRLab Animates Chris Burden's Unrealized Sculptures as Digital Artworks
TRLab has unveiled a collection of digital artworks inspired by unexecuted concepts from Chris Burden, created in collaboration with the Chris Burden Estate. These pieces are displayed at ART SG within the ArtReview Asia + Nowness Asia booth, with support from Ferragamo. The animations bring Burden's original designs to life in motion and 3D, aiming to engage a digitally-savvy audience. Featured works include The Burden Water Wheel, derived from a 2013 sketch, which nods to a 19th-century water wheel by Henry Burden (unrelated) that influenced the Ferris wheel. Another piece, Xanadu, is a miniature city featuring elements like Urban Light and Beehive Bunkers, which Burden envisioned in 2008 and continued developing until his passing in 2015. Co-founded by Audrey Ou and Xin Li-Cohen, TRLab has previously partnered with the Calder Foundation and Cai Guo-Qiang. These digital artworks serve as an educational platform that showcases Burden's imaginative yet grand sculptural visions, including flying steamrollers and 20-meter skyscrapers crafted from toy components.
