Tristan Murail Honored by Festival Présences at 74
The festival Présences at Radio France, Paris (February 8–13, 2022), dedicates a portrait to composer Tristan Murail, a pioneer of spectral music. Murail, 74, reflects on his career: he co-founded the spectral school in the 1970s with Gérard Grisey, breaking from serialism by exploring the interior of sound. After an empirical phase, he used computers to blend natural and synthetic sounds. He taught at Columbia University (13 years in New York), then in Salzburg and Shanghai. His recent works include Near Death Experience (2017, with video by Hervé Bailly-Basin based on Böcklin's Isle of the Dead) and Impression soleil levant (2021, inspired by Monet's painting). The festival features pianist François-Frédéric Guy performing Murail's pieces alongside Debussy's. Murail now lives in Provence; his childhood in Le Havre—a bombed, windy city—shaped his fascination with the sea, waves, and fog. He rejects the 'impressionist' label, preferring 'symbolism,' and cites influences like Liszt, Scriabin, and Borges. His cycle Portulan serves as an autobiographical metaphor. Murail's father was poet Gérard Murail; his sister is novelist Marie-Aude Murail. Grisey's death in 1998 inspired Winter Fragments. Murail's music aims for 'psychology of form' and conscious expression, moving beyond spectral techniques.
