Tripartite Exhibition 'On/Off' Explores Electric Light Across Luxembourg, Metz, Sarrebourg
The exhibition 'On/Off' inaugurates 'Luxembourg and Greater Region, European Capital of Culture 2007' across three venues: Casino Luxembourg, Frac Lorraine in Metz, and Saarland Museum in Sarrebourg, from December 9, 2006 to February 25, 2007. Each venue presents a distinct perspective on electric light in contemporary art. At Casino Luxembourg, light is used as a spectacular artistic material: Carsten Höller's penetrable 'Y' bristles with bulbs, John Armleder's disco spheres project myriad reflections, Peter Kogler's phosphorescent ants, Hsia-Fei Chang's manga neon signs, and Lilian Bourgeat's oversized bulbs create a festive atmosphere. Upstairs, Ann Veronica Janssens' dematerialized star 'Bluette' and Marie Sester's tracking beam question perception. Outside, Simone Decker's miniature replica of Pont Rouge covered in phosphorescent canvas glows at night. At Frac Lorraine, the 'off' side of light is explored: Dominique Petitgand's sound piece 'La Cécité' plunges listeners into darkness, Steve McQueen's 'Pursuit' immerses visitors in chaotic sounds and strange glows, and Tony Oursler's 'Talking Light' reacts to voice in a cramped closet. At Saarland Museum, Veit Stratmann's illuminated metal platform blurs interior/exterior, Christina Kubisch's white shadows appear under UV light, and Tobias Rehberger's interactive switch connects viewers in Sarrebourg and Luxembourg.
