Triennale Milano Opens Retrospective on Elio Fiorucci
A major retrospective on Elio Fiorucci (1935–2015) has opened at Triennale Milano, running until March 16, 2025. Curated by Judith Clark and designed by Fabio Cherstich, the exhibition features over 500 objects spanning fashion, art, and design. It arrives ahead of the tenth anniversary of the designer's death on July 20, 2025. The show traces Fiorucci's journey from a school desk to a rainbow finale, with the motto 'Fiorucci does not discriminate uniqueness and unusualness.' He revolutionized retail by turning stores into vibrant spaces blending music, art, and commerce. He popularized sexy denim and his cherub-print graphics, and also ventured into furniture design with colorful garden gnomes. The exhibition includes photographs and videos confirming his influence on pop culture: Madonna wore his clothes, Sister Sledge name-checked him in 'He's the Greatest Dancer,' and Andy Warhol collaborated on photo projects. Triennale president Stefano Boeri noted that Fiorucci made Milan 'a magnet for the most advanced ideas of international youth culture' and exported his chromatic comet worldwide. The show is structured like a bazaar of high-value objects, reflecting Fiorucci's creative legacy as both a person and a brand.
