Triennale Milano launches first VR experience '1923: Past Futures'

digital · 2026-04-27

Triennale Milano has unveiled its first virtual reality experience, '1923: Past Futures', a journey through a century of International Exhibitions and the history of the Palazzo dell'Arte by Giovanni Muzio, which has hosted the Triennale since 1933. The VR piece, developed by Reframe Productions with direction by Matteo Lonardi and funding from VIVE Arts, is part of the 23rd International Exhibition 'Unknown Unknowns. An Introduction to Mysteries'. It is a room-scale experience lasting about fifteen minutes, designed for a broad audience with minimal interactive elements. The visual style is synthetic, referencing Muzio's original drawings. Scenes include the original impluvium with its statue/fountain by Leone Lodi and Mario Sironi, the 2019 'Broken Nature' exhibition's 'Room of Change' installation by Accurat, the archives during the fascist era and WWII bombings, Lucio Fontana's 'Struttura al neon' from 1951, the 1968 protests, and the current 23rd International Exhibition. The experience is available at Triennale Milano until December 11, 2022, and on VIVEPORT. The exhibition also features the return of the Triennale Game Collection, a free collection of video games commissioned from leading video game artists.
