Triennale Milano Celebrates Sottsass Centenary with 'There is a Planet'

exhibition · 2026-05-05

On the centenary of Ettore Sottsass's birth and a decade after his death, Triennale Milano opened 'There is a Planet', curated by Barbara Radice. The exhibition begins with a display of one hundred plates from 'Offerta a Shiva' (1964), evoking cosmic rhythms. Nine chronological sections follow, from 'Per qualcuno può essere lo spazio' (up to 1955) to 'Vorrei sapere perché…' (until 2007). The show originates from an unrealized book project from the 1990s and includes a three-dimensional realization of an unpublished design. It features works spanning architecture, drawings, interiors, furniture, machines, ceramics, jewelry, paintings, textiles, and photography. Concurrently, the Met Breuer in New York presents 'Ettore Sottsass: Design Radical', which compares his work with contemporary objects. In April 2018, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam will host the first Dutch retrospective, following its acquisition of 1960s works, 'Cabinet n. 70' (2006), and 'Superbox' (1966). The Amsterdam show will chronologically trace Sottsass's journey from Modernism to Functionalism, highlighting cross-cultural influences and material experimentation.
