Triennale Milano: AI installation exposes persistent patriarchy

exhibition · 2026-04-26

An interactive AI installation at Triennale Milano, titled 'Not for Her. AI Revealing the Unseen', confronts visitors with their own unconscious gender biases. Conceived by Donatella Sciuto, Rector of Politecnico di Milano, the work uses adaptive algorithms that learn from visitor interactions to reveal persistent patriarchal structures in society. The installation is curated by Nicola Gatti, Ingrid Paoletti, and Matteo Ruta, with artistic direction by Umberto Tolino and Ilaria Bollati, who also designed the set-up. The piece features a mirrored wall that progressively darkens, and an aluminum floor that wears down with foot traffic, symbolizing the erosion of reflection. Visitors are immersed in scenarios like job interviews, where AI exposes discrimination. The project runs until November 9, 2025, and is a collaboration among several departments of Politecnico di Milano. It critiques the lack of cultural evolution alongside technological innovation, highlighting how gender disparities persist in STEM fields and daily life, despite historical precedents like the equal pay statute introduced by Ferdinand IV of Bourbon in the San Leucio silk factory.
