Triennale di Milano to Build Underground Expansion

architecture-design · 2026-05-04

La Triennale di Milano has announced an international design competition for a 6,000-square-meter underground expansion of the Palazzo dell'Arte, nearly doubling its exhibition space. The project, estimated at €15 million, will be located in the Triennale garden facing Parco Sempione. An iconic element will connect the underground level to the ground-floor Museo del Design Italiano (1,300 sqm) and upper floors. Artistic Director Lorenza Baroncelli stated the goal is to create a space for diverse exhibition formats while respecting Giovanni Muzio's original building. The competition will be open and in two phases, with the executive project expected by end of 2019 and completion within three years. Italian Minister Bonisoli confirmed €10 million in government funding for the first phase, with additional funds from private contributions and crowdfunding. The announcement coincided with the inauguration of the Museo del Design Italiano during Milan Design Week 2019, attended by Prime Minister Conte.
