Tribute bands thrive in Italy's live music scene

Tribute bands, which imitate famous groups by playing only their repertoire and dressing like them, are flourishing in Italy. On March 3, over a thousand people attended a full performance of Pink Floyd's The Wall at the Teatro Colosseo in Turin by the Italian tribute band Pink Floyd Legend, complete with a cardboard wall built on stage and a children's choir. These bands cater to diverse venues, from village festivals to pubs and private events, with top-tier acts charging up to 60 euros per ticket. Popular subjects include national icons like Vasco Rossi and Ligabue, as well as international acts such as Queen, Pink Floyd, and Iron Maiden. Pink Floyd Legend, led by bassist Fabio Castaldi, tours with two set designers and nine sound technicians, filling large theaters like Milan's Arcimboldi and Taormina's Teatro Antico. Queen Mania, founded by Sonny Ensabella in 2005, plays dozens of concerts yearly across Italy and Germany, with members also collaborating with artists like Achille Lauro and Piero Pelù. Smaller bands like the Blascover (Vasco Rossi tribute) perform up to 90 shows annually, earning around 1,800-2,000 euros per gig, though competition is fierce. While some critics dismiss tribute bands as lacking creativity, Castaldi compares them to orchestras playing classical repertoire, suggesting rock tribute bands are preserving the 'classical music of the future.'
