Triangular love and suburban landscapes: three painters at MACRO Rome

exhibition · 2026-05-05

The MACRO museum in Rome presents a group exhibition featuring Francesco Guerrieri, Lia Drei, and Giorgio Ortona, three painters whose work explores abstraction, geometry, and peripheral urban landscapes. Guerrieri (1931–2015) and Drei (1922–2005) were lifelong partners in art and life, developing a gestalt research that combined abstract informal painting with structuralist investigations. Drei was a member of Gruppo 63 and the Sperimentale p. group, focusing on geometric forms and vibrant colors, especially triangles. Guerrieri is known for his 'Quadri di luce' using only white and yellow. Ortona (born 1960 in Tripoli, lives in Rome) paints detailed, pale-colored views of suburban buildings in Rome and other cities like Naples, Palermo, Cairo, Kiev, and New Delhi, capturing the homogenized global periphery. His work blends figuration with influences from jazz, neoplasticism, and dioramas.
