Trevor Yeung's 'Jardin des neuf soleils' at CAPC Bordeaux
Hong Kong artist Trevor Yeung (b. 1988) has transformed the grand nave of the Centre d'arts plastiques contemporains (CAPC) in Bordeaux into an immersive emerald starlight landscape for his first institutional solo exhibition in Europe, 'Jardin des neuf soleils' (Garden of Nine Suns). The exhibition reimagines the Chinese cosmogonic myth of the ten suns, where nine were shot down by celestial archer Yi. Yeung created nine fallen sun sculptures specifically for the museum, using green light sources called 'Insectron'—museum pest-control devices—placed at either end of the nave, and covered all windows with green filters to eliminate other colors. The sculptures vary in form: a three-legged crow (the legendary form of the suns), a cut diamond, an inverted candelabrum, and a spiral galaxy with countless twinkling stars. On the mezzanines, mushroom-shaped nightlights and plastic vegetation guide visitors. Interactive elements invite visitors to use their phone flashlights to reveal perceptual phenomena; 'Passive Moon' scintillates only when a flash is aimed at it. A large double-arch scaffolding structure, 'Rainbow Ribboned Bridge,' allows visitors to tie colored ribbons to recompose the seven colors of the rainbow, which glow under flashlight. The floor is coated with iridescent powder varnish that reveals its shimmer only when sunlight hits it at certain hours. The exhibition opened in May 2026.
