Trenčín 2026 European Capital of Culture: Program Director Interview
Trenčín, Slovakia, will be European Capital of Culture in 2026 with the theme 'Awakening Curiosity' (Prebúdzame zvedavosť). Program director Stanislav Krajči outlines a program focused on breaking barriers and fostering dialogue, imagination, and participation. The initiative is deeply integrated with the city's long-term urban development, coordinated with the City of Trenčín and the Trenčín Self-Governing Region. An Institute for Participation ensures citizens, NGOs, and schools are co-creators. Key projects include the Light Art Festival in April, the urban market 'Città Reimmaginata/Korzo' in May preceded by the 'Tuning the City' musical parade, international artist interventions in June featuring Alexandra Pirici, Eugenio Tibaldi, Cecylia Malyk, and Tamás Kaszás, the 'Splanekor 2.0' floating vessels on the Váh River, the culinary festival 'Degustories', and the group exhibition 'Glocal Equality & Hospitality' curated by Ilona Németh and Edit András with artists Hito Steyerl, Artur Zmijewski, and Oliver Ressler. In September 2026, a disused railway bridge will be transformed into a pedestrian community center. Collaborations include joint activities with Oulu 2026 (Finland). Youth programs include 'New Generations of Creative Leaders' and 'Runway | Cultural Professionals' training. The legacy aims to create a living cultural ecosystem, civic energy, and courage for change.
