Tree VR: Experiencing Deforestation Through an Avatar
Milica Zec and Winslow Turner Porter III's virtual reality piece 'Tree' premieres in Italy at the Ferrara International Festival from October 5 to 7, 2018. The work invites viewers to embody a rainforest tree from seed to felling, addressing tropical deforestation. Supported by Fondazione Pianoterra, it is the second chapter of a trilogy exploring planetary life. The first chapter, 'Giant', focused on war from a child's perspective. FAO estimates 7 million hectares of forest lost annually. The installation begins with planting a real seed, then VR immersion through tree life stages, ending with a seed as a symbol of action. Artists partner with The Rainforest Alliance. The trilogy concludes in 2020 with 'Breathe', a VR film about hope.
