Treccani launches encyclopedia of contemporary art edited by Vincenzo Trione

publication · 2026-05-05

The Italian Encyclopedia Institute Treccani is publishing a four-volume encyclopedia of contemporary art, edited by Vincenzo Trione, art critic for Corriere della Sera and professor at IULM University in Milan. The work, scheduled for 2019, will contain over 4,000 entries across 850 pages per volume. It will cover a broad chronological range from the historical avant-gardes to the present day, adopting a geopolitical perspective that includes both the West and emerging systems, with a focus on artists and problematized concepts. The scientific committee includes Boris Groys (University of Karlsruhe), David Joselit (City University of New York), and Horst Bredekamp (Humboldt University of Berlin). The project is supported by Massimo Bray, editorial director of Treccani and former Minister of Cultural Heritage. This is not Treccani's first foray into contemporary art: last spring, the institute celebrated Antonio Gramsci with an artwork by Elisabetta Benassi and a performance of Luigi Nono's "La fabbrica illuminata," first aired at the 1965 Venice Biennale.
