Treccani Arte Launches Artist Encyclopedia Series with Baruchello's Psicoenciclopedia Possibile

publication · 2026-04-27

Treccani Arte has initiated a new editorial series inviting artists to create encyclopedias adhering only to the encyclopedia format and alphabetical order. The inaugural volume is Gianfranco Baruchello's "Psicoenciclopedia Possibile," unveiled in an online event on November 18, 2020, at 5 PM on Treccani Arte's social media channels. The event featured Baruchello alongside notable art figures Felice Cimatti, Manuela Fraire, Gianfranco Maraniello, Pietro Montani, and Fondazione Baruchello director Carla Subrizi, moderated by MAXXI Arte director Bartolomeo Pietromarchi. Baruchello's encyclopedia subverts traditional knowledge forms, reinterpreting language to forge new connections between word and image. The volume comprises over 800 pages, more than 1,200 alphabetically ordered entries including notes, dream transcriptions, and published and unpublished writings, plus 200 double-page plates from reorganized preexisting materials. The work is housed in a slipcase with a serigraph reflecting on plate 128 and Carla Subrizi's book "Note a margine. L'arte come esperimento del sapere." The prefix "psico-" and term "possibile" characterize Baruchello's approach, questioning encyclopedic knowledge while exploring emotions from individual to collective dimensions.
