Trap in Rome: Marco Sconocchia's photo project on youth in Roman suburbs
Photographer Marco Sconocchia (born 1988 in Turin, studied at Istituto Franco Balbis, moved to London in 2011) created the series 'Trap in Rome', following three young artists—Luca from Corviale, Morris from Quadraro, and Barbara from Tor Bella Monaca—who use trap music to escape the stereotypes of violence, drugs, and sexism associated with their peripheral neighborhoods. Sconocchia highlights how these suburbs are full of youth rejecting the link between public housing and crime, and how local associations work toward art and inclusion. Despite ongoing problems, areas like Corviale and Tor Bella Monaca host activities transforming peripheries into conscious nuclei of potential: popular gyms, soccer fields, and artistic initiatives. The project was published on Artribune in April 2022.
