"Transparent Things exhibition at Goldsmiths Centre explores Nabokovian themes through contemporary art."
From February 21 to May 3, 2020, the Goldsmiths Centre for Contemporary Art in London presented the exhibition Transparent Things, curated by Natasha Hoare. Drawing inspiration from Vladimir Nabokov's 1972 novel, the show included pieces by artists such as Becky Beasley (Astray (D.A.M.) (2018)), Marie Lund (Stills (2015)), David Hammons (Untitled (Basketball drawing + stone) (2006)), Lucy Skaer (The Blue Window (2017)), Michael Dean (whitewashed windows and concrete obelisks), Kerry Tribe (Parnassius Mnemosyne (2010)), and Theaster Gates (Hammond organ). The exhibition examined themes of transparency, memory, and identity, probing how narratives affect personal histories, with windows serving as metaphors for barriers while upholding the sanctity of private life, all without resorting to confessional expressions in line with Nabokov's style.
