Transient Space: Video Art in a Manchester School of Art Atrium

exhibition · 2026-05-04

On October 26, 2018, the British festival Design Manchester concluded with 'Disrupt the Channel,' a group video art exhibition within the broader 'Transient_Space' project. Conceived by lecturer and graphic designer Adam Griffiths, inspired by Marc Augé's non-place theory, Transient_Space is an exhibition space in the atrium of Manchester School of Art, a transit area with four public screens. The gallery walls become digital canvases for a fast, scroll-like visual experience curated by Griffiths. 38 artists/creatives participated, including Ian Anderson of The Designers Republic, South Korean duo Sulki & Min, and German designer Patrick Thomas, each contributing 17-second videos—a duration matching the average time visitors spend on artworks at New York's Metropolitan Museum, reflecting the ephemerality of contemporary cultural products.
