Tracey Emin Returns to New York with White Cube Solo Show

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Tracey Emin, the British artist born in 1963 and a key figure among the Young British Artists, opened her solo exhibition 'Tracey Emin: Lovers Grave' at White Cube New York on November 4, 2023, marking her return to the city after nearly a decade. The show, running until January 13, 2024, features around 25 works, mostly acrylic paintings in icy blues and reds, exploring themes of a suffering, ecstatic, and loving body. Emin is known for provocative installations like 'Everyone I Have Ever Slept With' (1995), a tent embroidered with 102 names, and 'My Bed' (1998), a reconstruction of her bed after a psychological breakdown, which sold at Christie's in 2014 for $5.1 million. Her relationship with the US has been fraught; in 2017, she split from her New York gallery Lehmann Maupin. Emin has renovated a residence at Fitzroy Square in London, once home to Virginia Woolf and George Bernard Shaw, where she now lives and works. She reflects on her past reception: 'I think people weren't sure I was sincere, and I hope now they will understand that I am and always have been.'
