Toyin Ojih Odutola Wins Prix Jean-François Prat 2020
Toyin Ojih Odutola has been awarded the 9th Prix Jean-François Prat, receiving €20,000 and a catalogue. The prize, established in 2012 in memory of art-loving lawyer Jean-François Prat, selects one winner from eight shortlisted artists each year. The 2020 jury, chaired by Marie-Claude Beaud (director of Nouveau Musée national de Monaco), chose Odutola among finalists Kei Imazu and Torey Thornton. Odutola, a Nigerian-born artist based in the US, is known for her black-figure portraits in charcoal, pastel, and ballpoint pen. Her series The Treatment (2015) applies blackface to white celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio and Prince Charles. Kei Imazu, born in Japan and based in Indonesia, creates large, chaotic collages combining digital sampling and painting, often addressing cultural loss and disappearance. Torey Thornton, a Brooklyn-based artist born in 1985, produces combine paintings using found materials and enigmatic titles. The exhibition runs at Bredin Prat Foundation in Paris from October 2 to November 14, 2020, open Saturdays.
