Townhouse Gallery in Cairo redefines institutional role with community focus and international collaborations
William Wells and Yasser Gerab co-own Cairo's Townhouse Gallery, emphasizing community as central to its identity. Located on a downtown backstreet, the gallery comprises four buildings housing one of the Middle East's largest private exhibition spaces, a public library, studios, and areas for performances, workshops, and community projects. It works with both Arab and international artists, challenging traditional institutional norms. In September, Townhouse collaborated with London's Serpentine Gallery to present Susan Hefuna's 'I Love Egypt', Speak Out!, a temporary learning camp in Hyde Park. The gallery has expanded its role to include teaching and critiquing art as an exclusive, object-based product by opening its walls to the public. Following the Egyptian revolution, it launched The Popular Show, inviting anyone to submit works or objects in any medium, quantity, or scale to address exclusivity in contemporary art institutions. This initiative reflects Townhouse's commitment to accessibility and its unique approach to fostering artistic opportunities, including helping Arab artists exhibit abroad.
