Tour of Milan's Postwar Architecture by Mattioni and Vietti
The Fondazione dell’Ordine degli Architetti di Milano organized a tour of thirteen buildings by Luigi Mattioni and Luigi Vietti, curated by Leonardo Chironi and Stefano Passamonti with guide Carlo Gandolfi. Luigi Vietti (b. 1903), known for villas in Cortina, Portofino, and the Costa Smeralda, also designed Milanese works like the residential complex in Piazza Paolo VI (1955) and the Torre Piaggio (1951-1955) in corso Sempione, a 62-meter tower with FEAL aluminum frames and Securit glass. Luigi Mattioni, a student of Piero Portaluppi, built over 200 structures, including the Grattacielo di Milano (Torre Breda, 1950) in via Vittor Pisani, which was the first Milanese building to exceed the height of the Madonnina and featured forced-air ventilation for windowless bathrooms. The tower, criticized as speculative, was defended by Mattioni in Edilizia Moderna. The tour highlighted the need to protect modern architectural heritage, as original features like Curtisa windows and mosaic cladding are being replaced.
