cultural-heritage · 2026-04-26

For the first time, the Tour de France will start from Italy, with the 111th edition's Grand Départ taking place in Florence on Saturday, June 29, 2024. To celebrate, the Florentine Civic Museums and MUS.E are organizing special openings and programs dedicated to cycling. The Museo Gino Bartali in Ponte a Ema, where the legendary cyclist was born and began his career, will be open for free from June 28 to 30, 2024, featuring children's activities and guided tours. The museum displays Bartali's memorabilia and historic bicycles from the 19th and 20th centuries. The Memoriale delle Deportazioni in Piazza Bartali honors Bartali's efforts to save Jews between 1943 and 1944. Additionally, Forte Belvedere (Forte di San Giorgio) reopened to the public on June 25, with free access to its outdoor spaces and guided tours on Fridays and Sundays. Other special openings include Porta San Frediano (until September 30), Torre della Zecca, Torre San Niccolò (recently restored), and Fortezza da Basso.
