Toulouse Celebrates Le Petit Prince Day with Saint-Exupéry Heritage
On June 29, the Antoine de Saint Exupéry Youth Foundation, established in 2009 by the writer's heirs, launched the Petit Prince Day five years ago to commemorate the 120th anniversary of Antoine de Saint Exupéry's birth in Lyon on June 29, 1900. The date has since become an institution across France, particularly in Toulouse, where the first French airmail company, Aéropostale, was founded in 1918 by Pierre-Georges Latécoère. Saint-Exupéry was among its pioneering pilots. The interactive museum L’Envol des Pionniers, located in the historic Montaudran district along the Hers-Mort river, celebrates the feats of aviation pioneers and the transatlantic airline that connected France to South America. The museum offers theatrical guided tours where a pilot portraying Saint-Exupéry recounts his desert challenges and spectacular exploits. Toulouse has also honored the writer with Avenue Saint-Exupéry, leading to the Aéropostale district, and a statue in Jardin Royal depicting him with a book, engaging in a gaze with his famous character. In the city center, the Hôtel du Grand Balcon, where Saint-Exupéry stayed in room 32 overlooking Place du Capitole, has been declared a commemorative site by the French Ministry of Culture. His flight experiences—silence among clouds, encounters with the desert and solitude—deeply influenced his writing, inspiring works like Night Flight and Wind, Sand and Stars.
