Toti Scialoja's 'Impronte' at Galleria dello Scudo in Verona
Galleria dello Scudo in Verona presents 'Impronte. Opere 1957-1963', a show of thirty works by Toti Scialoja (Rome, 1914–1998) from the Fondazione Toti Scialoja. Curated by Giuseppe Appella, the exhibition also marks the launch of the Catalogo generale dei dipinti e delle sculture 1940-1998. The show traces Scialoja's shift from figuration to abstraction, culminating in his 'stamping' technique. It opens with 'Il sette di settembre' (1957), the first work in the series, and includes large canvases from 1958 such as 'Ininterrotto' and 'Sabato sera'. Works from his New York period (1960), made in a Greenwich Street loft, emphasize monumentality and essentiality. The exhibition closes with pieces from his Parisian season using materials like rope, gauze, and lace, exemplified by 'Corda bianca' (1963). Scialoja abandoned the brush for a rag soaked in color and worked on raw hemp canvas nailed to the floor, favoring automatism. His New York sojourn brought him into contact with De Kooning, Rothko, Motherwell, Kline, Pollock, and Gorky.
