Toti Scialoja's Complete Catalogue of Paintings and Sculptures Published
After three and a half years of meticulous work by Giuseppe Appella, the General Catalogue of Paintings and Sculptures 1940-1998 dedicated to Toti Scialoja (Rome 1914–1998) is now available. Published by Silvana Editoriale, the 768-page volume covers Scialoja's entire career, from his early Impressionist influences to his innovative techniques like the 'imprints' (Impronte) created in Procida in summer 1957 and the use of rags instead of brushes, as seen in 'La caccia n. 1' (1955). Scialoja, a multifaceted artist who also worked in poetry, sculpture, theater, cinema, music, and teaching, influenced figures such as Mario Ceroli, Pino Pascali, Giosetta Fioroni, and Jannis Kounellis. His artistic journey included a significant period in New York (October–December 1956) where he connected with de Kooning, Cy Twombly, Rothko, Hartung, Guston, and Motherwell, leading him to abandon figuration for abstraction. The catalogue includes a section 'Vita, opere, fortuna critica' and a bibliography listing all interventions by and about the artist from December 7, 1929, to July 5, 2023. The work draws on archives from the Archivio Scialoja, the Fondazione Scialoja, Italian and foreign libraries, galleries, institutions, private archives, and collectors. Achille Perilli's farewell speech at the Accademia di San Luca on March 2, 1998, is also referenced.
