Toronto's Lassonde Art Trail Opens with 17 Works Along Revitalized Waterfront

The Lassonde Art Trail (Lat) opened in June in Toronto's Port Lands area, featuring 17 artworks, mostly new commissions, along a 2.5-mile route. The trail is part of a C$1.4bn ($1bn) revitalization project aimed at improving the city's connection to its waterfront. Funded by a C$25m gift from philanthropist Pierre Lassonde, the trail includes permanent and temporary works. Notable pieces include Alexandre Arrechea's 'Orange Functional' (2022), a tree-like structure with red basketball hoops, and upcoming sculptures by Kent Monkman and Joana Vasconcelos. The trail is curated by November Paynter, artistic director and chief curator, and Chloë Catán, executive director. The project also includes works by Kara Hamilton and Alexa Kumiko Hatanaka, focusing on sustainability and Indigenous histories. The trail is expected to attract 1.5 million visitors annually.
