Toronto Holocaust Museum Opens with $14.5M in Funding
The Toronto Holocaust Museum opened on June 9, 2023, funded by a $12 million donation from the Azrieli Foundation and a $2,522,558 Canadian government grant to the United Jewish Appeal of Greater Toronto. Canadian Heritage Minister Pablo Rodriguez stated the government supports Jewish communities and fights antisemitism. The museum is an extension of the Sarah and Chaim Neuberger Holocaust Education Centre, founded 36 years ago. The 1,000-square-meter facility features cutting-edge technology, including 11 video testimony stations and interactive geographic maps. Director Dara Solomon explained the immersive environment allows visitors to hear survivor voices and understand the scale of the Holocaust. A 2018 national study commissioned by the Azrieli Foundation and the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany found that 22% of Canadians aged 18–34 had not heard of the Holocaust, and over half did not know its extent. B'nai Brith Canada documented a 733% increase in antisemitic violence in 2022, averaging eight incidents per day. Racist comments by rapper Kanye West have also fueled calls for better education against hatred. Naomi Azrieli, CEO of the Azrieli Foundation, emphasized that Holocaust education methods are evolving with advanced technology.
