Toronto Fashion Designers Innovate Amid Scarcity

In January 2026, the Toronto Fashion Incubator, recognized as the first incubation model dedicated to fashion, ceased operations after nearly four decades of aiding thousands of designers. This shutdown underscores the difficulties encountered by independent fashion creators in Toronto, where rental prices for arts organizations surged nearly 38% from 2019 to 2023. Additionally, creative spaces have relocated from historic areas such as West Queen West, witnessing a loss of over 76% of galleries and independent studios in the past ten years. Nevertheless, three designers are making strides: Wanze Song, Spencer Badu, and Gabriel Ting. Song is preparing his 10th collection for Spring/Summer 2027 under his label WANZE, emphasizing local craftsmanship. Badu, who launched his brand a decade ago after starting at the incubator, is on his 17th collection, Playboy, while Ting, who has changed studios four times, is developing Capsule 3 and a side project titled "INFANT BY WiT," which merges performance art with garment-making concepts inspired by Catholicism. These designers foster community through pop-ups and studio visits, reshaping sustainable brand development in a space-constrained city.
