Toronto Biennial of Art awards prizes to Camille Turner and Aycoobo, with new categories announced

award · 2026-04-20

Camille Turner was honored with the Artist Prize at the Toronto Biennial of Art for her 2022 multimedia work, Nave. This installation delves into Afrofuturism and historical inquiry, revealing colonial Canada's role in the transatlantic slave trade through the interplay of a church nave, a ship's hold, a tomb, and the womb of the world. The Emerging Artist Prize was awarded to Colombian artist Aycoobo / Wilson Rodríguez, whose paper works reflect the botanical wisdom imparted by his father, Abel, a respected elder in the Nonuya Indigenous community near the Cahuinarí River in the Amazon. Both artists will receive CAD$10,000. A jury featuring Michelle Jacques, Dr. Julie Nagam, and Lisa Steele chose the recipients. In June 2022, the biennial will launch two new prize categories: the Audience Artist Prize and the Programs Prize, determined by public voting online.
