Tornaviaje: Ibero-American Art at the Prado Museum
The Museo del Prado in Madrid presents 'Tornaviaje: Ibero-American Art in Spain', an exhibition showcasing over 100 works from the Spanish viceroyalties, many previously unknown to the public. Curated by Rafael López Guzmán of the University of Granada, with collaboration from UNAM specialists and support from Fundación Axa, the show runs until February 13, 2022. It features 107 pieces, about a third restored by Prado's labs, with only fifteen from abroad. The exhibition is divided into four thematic sections covering painting, sculpture, maps, religious objects, and decorative arts. Highlights include the 'Screen with the Conquest of Tenochtitlán and View of Mexico City' (1692-96), a 'Portrait of Montezuma' attributed to Antonio Rodríguez from the Uffizi, and a 18th-century 'Our Lady of Anguish' with a stuffed crocodile, symbolizing evil in indigenous iconography. The show emphasizes the bidirectional cultural exchange between Spain and its colonies from the 16th to 19th centuries, challenging the notion of one-way colonial influence.
