Tornado- and Fire-Resistant Earthship Residence to Be Built in Kansas

A new Earthship residence, designed by Michael E Reynolds, is set to be constructed just outside Lawrence, Kansas. This tornado- and fire-resistant project, dubbed a 'Refuge Earthship', will feature two bedrooms and two bathrooms, with four ferro-cement vaults engineered to withstand extreme winds and fire. The construction will utilize recycled materials, including up to 1,000 tyres, 16,000 used aluminum cans, and 1,000 old cardboard boxes, which are being collected locally. Earthships, conceived by Reynolds in the early 1970s in Taos, New Mexico, are off-grid, self-sustaining homes that do not use fossil fuels or generate waste. The Earthship community has expanded to over 60 homes in Taos and up to 3,000 worldwide. The new residence follows Earthship Biotecture's six principles: building with natural and repurposed materials, thermal mass heating and cooling, wind and solar electricity, rainwater harvesting, wastewater treatment, and food production in an integrated greenhouse. Construction begins in September with a crew including 25 international students. Reynolds expressed excitement, noting the building's necessity in the current world state and his anticipation for it to endure an actual tornado.
