Torino's ViadellaFucina16 becomes world's first condominium museum

other · 2026-04-27

In Turin, a dilapidated 19th-century building at via La Salle 16 (formerly via della Fucina) in the Porta Palazzo neighborhood is transforming into the world's first condominium museum. The project, ViadellaFucina16 condominio-museo, is an artist residency program conceived by Kaninchen-Haus, the cultural association of the artist duo Coniglioviola. It originated from an informal proposal by Brice Coniglio to residents in January 2016 and is now funded by SIAE and MiBACT through the 'SILLUMINA – Residenze artistiche e di formazione' call (€36,000) and the Housing Program of Compagnia di San Paolo (€20,000). Partners include the Education Department of Castello di Rivoli and the collective a.titolo. The building houses over 200 tenants of various nationalities across 53 apartments. Through an international open call open to any discipline, artists are invited for residencies from July to December to create permanent works in common spaces, forming a condominium art collection. At least four artists under 35 will be selected, but more are expected; over 100 applications have already been received. Artists over 35 or from Turin can also participate spontaneously by donating works or mentoring. Residents will select winning projects with a board of curators and professionals. Starting in 2018, the format will be replicable elsewhere, monitored by sociologists, anthropologists from the University of Turin, and cultural economists. The deadline to apply is June 25.
