Torino's Lingotto rooftop garden and sculpture park opens to public
Turin now has its own version of New York's High Line, but instead of a railway track, the hanging garden grows on the former car-testing track atop the iconic Lingotto factory, home to the Pinacoteca Agnelli. Landscape architect Benedetto Camerana, who also designed the Olympic Village area and the pedestrian bridge linking it to Lingotto, created the garden at the suggestion of Ginevra Elkann, who wanted something similar to the High Line. The historic track, renamed Pista 500, now features 28 islands with over 40,000 plants of 300 species, mostly native to the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines and Maritime Alps, including perennial herbs, aromatics, edibles, and medicinal plants, designed to create a kaleidoscope that changes color with the seasons. The track opens to the public in early October with a fitness area, yoga, jogging, meditation, reading, electric Fiat 500 circulation, a terrace, restaurant, bar, and an outdoor contemporary art space. The garden already hosts sculptures by major 20th-century artists from the Fondation Maeght in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, ahead of the exhibition "Fondazione Maeght. Un atelier a cielo aperto" curated by Daniela Ferretti, opening October 16 at the Pinacoteca. Works include a sculpture and sheet metal by Joan Miró, bronzes by Ossip Zadkine and Jean Arp, and pieces by Jean-Paul Riopelle, Claude Viseux, Norbert Kricke, and Barbara Hepworth.
