Torino's First Museum of Homosexuality Gains Institutional Backing

institutional · 2026-04-27

In October 2021, Angelo Pezzana, the founder of the FUORI! homosexual liberation movement, proposed the establishment of Italy's inaugural Museum of Homosexuality in Turin to Mayor Stefano Lo Russo and Piedmont Region President Alberto Cirio. He emphasized that Turin, recognized as the "capital of rights," is home to the nation’s sole university chair dedicated to the History of Homosexuality and was gearing up for the European Pride assembly in 2022. A support committee, comprising activists and politicians, emerged in early 2023. With bipartisan backing, Lo Russo and Cirio are considering the Palazzo San Celso and San Daniele complex as potential sites. Pezzana envisions the museum, inspired by Berlin's Schwules Museum, as a significant draw to enhance Turin's Europride bid while funding is being arranged.
