Torino hosts two-day tribute to filmmaker Chantal Akerman

festival-fair · 2026-05-04

The Cinema Massimo in Turin will host "New Desire Omaggio a Chantal Akerman" on February 23-24, a two-day event dedicated to the late Belgian filmmaker and artist Chantal Akerman, who died in 2015 shortly after presenting her final work "No Home Movie" at the Locarno Festival. Organized by Lovers Film Festival, Museo Nazionale del Cinema, and the Master in Design for Arts of Politecnico di Torino, in collaboration with Aiace and with support from Filmidee and Sindacato Belleville, the event also benefits from the Cinémathèque Royale de Belgique and the Cinémathèque Française. The program features screenings of Akerman's debut film "Je tu il elle," "Toute une nuit," and "No Home Movie," alongside workshops by artists Doug Ashford, Max Pitegoff, and Calla Henkel focusing on gender identity, women's liberation, ethnic minorities, and LGBTQ+ movements. Participants include Pier Paolo Peruccio, Gail Cochrane, Sergio Pace, Carlo Chatrian (artistic director of Locarno Film Festival and soon of Berlin International Film Festival), and cinematographer Caroline Champetier. The event anticipates the Lovers Film Festival scheduled for April 24-28.
