Torino Hosts Major Exhibition of Postwar Italian Art from GNAM

exhibition · 2026-04-26

From October 19, 2024 to March 2, 2025, the Sale Chiablese of the Musei Reali di Torino presents "1950-1970. La grande arte italiana. Capolavori dalla Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea," featuring 79 works from Rome's Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea (GNAM). Curated by GNAM director Renata Cristina Mazzantini and scholar Luca Massimo Barbero, the exhibition explores the artistic experimentation of postwar Italy, focusing on the dialogue between Rome and Turin. It highlights the legacy of Palma Bucarelli, GNAM's director from 1942 to 1975, who built the collection through direct relationships with artists. Featured artists include Alberto Burri, Lucio Fontana, Pino Pascali, Piero Manzoni, Mario Schifano, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Carla Accardi, and others. The exhibition aims to present these works as international classics, with Barbero noting that Italian artists from this period are now recognized globally, as seen in recent shows like the Arte Povera exhibition at Pinault Collection in Paris. The project was championed by Mario Turetta, head of the Ministry of Culture's Department for Cultural Activities and delegated director of the Musei Reali, who emphasized the collaboration between two national museum institutions and the appeal to cosmopolitan audiences connected to events like Artissima and Luci d'Artista.
