Topolino Celebrates Venice's Regata Storica in New Comic

The Italian comic magazine Topolino pays homage to Venice's Regata Storica with a special story titled "Minni Gondoliera e la Grande Regata del Doge," published in issue 3432, available from September 1, 2021. Written by Roberto Gagnor and illustrated by Valerio Held, the comic is set in Venice at the dawn of the Renaissance. The plot follows Minni, the young niece of Doge Basettonigo, who proposes a regatta open to all to celebrate the return of the noble Clarabella Cornett from a long journey in the East—a reference to the historical figure Caterina Cornaro, who renounced the throne of Cyprus in favor of Venice. Minni is initially barred from participating due to strict court rules but, with the help of gondolier Topolin dello Squero, she attempts to join the race and save the festivities. The story features sabotage and unexpected twists. Gagnor emphasized the desire for a rebellious female protagonist, stating that Minni's character matches Mickey's adventurous spirit. Held, a Venetian native, noted that the city's urban layout—with arches, curves, and circles—lends itself perfectly to the Disney aesthetic. The comic also includes an informational feature on the Regata Storica, which takes place on September 5, 2021, featuring 16th-century boats, costumed gondoliers, and reenactments of Venetian dignitaries along the Grand Canal.
