Top Gun: Maverick to premiere at Cannes Film Festival

festival-fair · 2026-04-27

The 75th Cannes Film Festival will host the European debut of Top Gun: Maverick, the eagerly anticipated follow-up to the 1986 classic. Directed by Joseph Kosinski and penned by Ehren Kruger, Eric Warren Singer, and Christopher McQuarrie, the film features Tom Cruise returning as Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell. After three decades in service, Maverick is summoned back to Top Gun to prepare a select group of graduates for a perilous mission, confronting his past along the way, including the son of his deceased friend Goose, Lieutenant Bradley 'Rooster' Bradshaw (Miles Teller). The ensemble cast includes Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, and Val Kilmer. The movie is set to hit Italian theaters on May 25, distributed by Eagle Pictures. McQuarrie acknowledged the difficulties in crafting a sequel to such a legendary film, prioritizing storytelling over replicating the original's allure. The project faced delays following director Tony Scott's tragic passing in 2012.
