Top 7 Works at the 2017 Venice Biennale

exhibition · 2026-05-05

The 57th Venice Biennale, curated by Christine Macel, concluded its opening days. Artribune selected the seven best works from the Arsenale, Giardini, and national pavilions. Belgian artist Edith Dekyndt presented 'One thousand and one night' at the Arsenale, a meditative work dragging dust in a lit rectangle. At the South African Pavilion, Candice Breitz's 'Love Story' featured interviews with six political refugees reinterpreted by Julianne Moore and Alec Baldwin. Mark Bradford's US Pavilion installation 'Tomorrow is another day' forced visitors into a narrow space, critiquing political and economic power. Michel Blazy's shoe wall sprouting plants at the Arsenale became the most Instagrammed work. Dirk Braeckman's analog photographs at the Belgian Pavilion countered digital saturation with static, anonymous figures. Giorgio Andreotta Calò's scaffold-tube installation at the Italian Pavilion created an ascensional path ending in a hypnotic water mirror. Olafur Eliasson and Edi Rama hosted a workshop at the Giardini where eight participants from migrant-heavy countries built green lamps sold for €250 to benefit refugee aid.
