Top 5 New York Shows During Frieze Week 2016

exhibition · 2026-05-05

During Frieze New York 2016, five standout exhibitions were identified across Manhattan and Brooklyn. At the Metropolitan Museum of Art, "Manus x Machina" explores the intersection of handcraft and machine production in fashion, featuring pieces from houses like Vuitton, Saint Laurent, Prada, Valentino, Balenciaga, and Chanel. The New Museum hosts the first major survey of French painter Nicole Eisenman, whose work blurs lines between absurdity, comics, timeless imagery, and surreal representations of sex. At David Zwirner, Jordan Wolfson presents a large-scale mechanical sculpture with chains, a wooden puppet with glowing eyes and red hair, undergoing a choreographed torture. Pace Gallery features Richard Tuttle's display of all 26 solo exhibitions he held in New York from 1965 to 2014, arranged chronologically. The Brooklyn Museum offers a Tom Sachs retrospective of 18 works, presented in the glass hall with free admission, incorporating everyday objects into a sonic and visual symphony. All exhibitions remain open for several weeks, some through summer.
