Tony Feher and Tom Fairs Exhibition at Kerry Schuss Gallery Explores Light and Material

exhibition · 2026-04-22

From March 1 to April 26, 2015, Kerry Schuss presented a two-person exhibition featuring Tony Feher and Tom Fairs at 34 Orchard Street in New York City. Feher transformed the gallery's windows using overlapping strips of blue decorator's tape on Perspex panels, creating stained-glass effects that cast blue light onto walls. British artist Tom Fairs (1925-2007) was represented by framed pencil drawings on paper, displayed at intervals around the space. Fairs' drawings, created on location around London's Hampstead Heath, emphasize spatial rhythms and light modulation through varied pencil marks rather than verisimilitude. The exhibition revealed both artists' preoccupation with light—Feher through material intervention, Fairs through drawing techniques that collapse physiological responses to space and illumination. Fairs had studied stained glass design at the Royal College of Art and worked on Coventry Cathedral's nave windows postwar. The review draws conceptual parallels between Fairs' work and Paul Cézanne's drawings, citing Cézanne's conversation with Joachim Gasquet about capturing emotion and light without 'a single link too loose.' Kerry Schuss's installation integrated both bodies of work unobtrusively with the Lower East Side gallery's architectural qualities.
