Tony Cragg's Sculptures on Milan Cathedral Roof

exhibition · 2026-05-05

On April 16, 2015, despite Milan's typical gray sky, British sculptor Tony Cragg's works were inaugurated on the Terrazze del Duomo, the rooftop terraces of Milan Cathedral. The exhibition, titled 'Tony Cragg. Dialogo con il Duomo,' runs until October 31, 2015. Four sculptures in different materials were installed: 'Eliptical Column' (2009, steel), 'Luke' (2008, carbon fiber), 'Ever After' (2006, bronze), and 'Split Figure' (2014, fiberglass). The works engage with the cathedral's late-Gothic architecture, sharing an upward thrust and surface movement. Philippe Daverio, Artistic Director of the Grande Museo del Duomo, expressed skepticism about the dialogue between the contemporary sculptures and the historic building, calling the initiative 'pop.' However, the article argues that the cathedral itself has a history of embracing foreign styles and updating itself. Cragg's artistic journey began with found objects and shifted in the mid-1980s to exploring matter and organic forms inspired by nature.
